Stroll Bugis Junction in the coming weeks and you’ll likely stumble upon a pop-up that is sure to attract more than a few curious glances. Pop Mart is setting up for Singaporeans to part with their money with their upcoming Molly Anniversary Statues Pop-Up Store from 27 August to 22 September.
For those not in the know, Molly isn’t just any art toy; she’s become a cultural staple in the collectible scene. Conceived by artist Kenny Wong back in 2006, Molly has since built a large following with her distinctive pout, wide eyes, and ever-changing aesthetic. Fans that I spoke to tells me that her charm lies in her quirks – an “oddball personality” that’s endeared her to them as well as fans across the world.
Now, Molly fans in Singapore are in for a treat. This pop-up at Bugis Junction’s Level 1 Malay Street will dive deep into Molly’s whimsical universe. What’s unique here is that this is the first time a Molly Anniversary Statues-themed pop-up is being rolled out anywhere in the world, and Singapore gets to host it.
Of course, what’s a Molly pop-up without exclusives? The pop-up will offer a range of Molly merchandise that you won’t find anywhere else, including scented candle blind boxes and fridge magnets. There’s even a reproduced limited edition 1st Anniversary statue, which is bound to be on the radar of collectors. Not to mention Singapore-exclusive Molly-themed goodies – think fans, postcards, and tote bags, all decked out with that familiar wide-eyed stare.
Even if you’re not there to open your wallets, visitors will find themselves surrounded by displays inspired by the Classical Retro Series 2, which is a nod to Molly’s origins and evolution.
So, whether you’re a longtime fan or just curious about what all the fuss is about, this pop-up might just be the quirky detour your weekend needs. After all, it’s not every day that you get to see a “collectible” icon celebrated in such style right in the heart of Singapore.
