Two years since Netflix launched its ad-supported plan in select territories, the streaming service has achieved 70 million active monthly users for that plan alone.

In a recent press note to the media, Netflix said that 50% of new sign-ups for Netflix are for the ads-supported plan, called Basic with Ads.

This is a massive difference from just six months earlier, when Netflix shared that the plan previously reached 40 million subscribers.

The press note also added that the second season of Squid Game will have multiple advertisers, including the likes of Korean automotive brand Kia, where it will showcase the brand’s new SUV.

Netflix said it would roll out its in-house advertising technology globally in 2025 to further improve it. This technology is currently only available in its first ad-supported plan market, Canada.

The company is also introducing programmatic ad buying in the U.S., Brazil, Canada, and Mexico.

Currently, Netflix's ad-supported plan is priced at US$6.99/month. It offers content at 720p (HD resolution) with about 4-5 advertisements per hour of streaming. The ads are not skippable.

12 territories have Netflix’s Basic with Ads for its subscribers, which includes three Asia Pacific markets (Australia, Japan, and South Korea) alongside Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain, the U.K., and the U.S.

The plan is not available in Singapore at the time of publishing this article.
