Facebook-owned Oculus has announced that it’s making a few changes to how users log into their Oculus accounts moving forward.

Starting Oct 2020, new users using an Oculus device for the first time will need to log in with a Facebook account.

If you’re an existing user and have always used a separate Oculus account, you’ll have the option to log in with Facebook and merge your Oculus and Facebook accounts.

While you can choose not to merge your accounts, there will be more and more caveats as time goes on. For one, Oculus is ending support for Oculus accounts on Jan 1, 2023. You can still use your device after that, but Oculus warns that you may not get full functionality (e.g. some games and apps may no longer work).

Also, all future Oculus VR headsets will require a Facebook account — there’s no option to use an Oculus account even if you’re willing to give up certain functions.

Even if you log in with your Facebook account, Oculus says you can still create or keep a VR profile that’s different from your Facebook profile.
