Terraria creator has dumped the Stadia port after losing access to his Google account

You'd be pretty miffed too if Google suddenly locked you out of thousands of dollars worth of apps without a justifiable reason.

With over 30 million copies sold as of April last year, there's no doubt that Terraria is a pretty big indie fish in the modern gaming pond. Loads of people play it day in and day out in both solo and co-op, and its fanbase is one that's only going to get bigger as time passes.

However, it seems Google's incompetence in one of the most basic of customer service operations (namely replying properly to user queries) has caused its cloud gaming platform Stadia to lose this valuable long-term catch.

Terraria's co-creator Andrew Spinks has recently thrown out a rather heated tweet, accusing Google of giving him "the runaround" after disabling access to his account for no specified reason, and has thus cancelled the popular indie title's Stadia port, even going so far as to say that

"doing business with you (Google) is a liability.".

That's a pretty nasty way to put it, but it's hard not to sympathise with Spinks here. As the story goes, Spinks has been trying his hardest to recover access to it for the past three weeks, since it has not only locked him out of access to his Gmail, Google Drive data and "thousands of dollars of apps" on Google Play, but also Terraria studio Re-Logic's official YouTube channel.

Or to be more specific, that's where the ball originally started rolling downhill.

Despite having posted no new content for several months, Re-Logic's YouTube channel was suddenly taken down over alleged Terms of Service violations, although Spinks has noted that no formal and justifiable reason was ever provided for it. Initially, he thought that Google's team might have sent it in by mistake and that it would be resolved after a few days, which is a perfectly logical assumption. However, it only got worse as Spinks then found his personal Google account, which was linked to the studio's YouTube channel was subsequently disabled as well.

Which brings us to the present moment, one which sees Stadia losing yet another big title to a situation that was, in many ways completely avoidable. It's an especially heavy blow considering the company has recently decided to shutter in-house Stadia game development, and as for Spinks, we (and the entire Terraria community) can only hope that the tech giant comes forward to explain (and rectify) the mess.
