This game’s final major update is a doozy.

Nintendo has just announced one last big update for Super Mario Maker 2, which comes with several new items to populate levels with. It also gives players the tools to make Super Mario games of their very own!

First off, the update introduces a bunch of new enemies to the game, such as Koopalings - the seven elite members of Bowser’s army. These new enemies function as bosses with unique movesets and different appearances, depending on which era of Mario games you’re planning to use. Hopefully, this means that you’ll see less Bowser boss battles in other players’ levels.

Other power-ups introduced include pick-ups from games like Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World, such as the frog suit and power balloon. The big news here is the new World Maker mode, which lets you design an entire map which connects all your courses together.

Essentially, you can create entire Mario games of your very own. Design your own overworld with new cosmetic options, such as by customising level icons and changing the theme of the entire world. You can have up to eight worlds in total, with 40 levels spread out across them. This is a pretty insane update, and it would be even better if the game allows you to play through the worlds other players have made.

This update comes to Super Mario Maker 2 for free on April 22, 2020. It’s the last major content update for the game, but seeing as it allows you to make multiple Mario games of your own - I think we can give them a pass on this one.

This year is Super Mario’s 35th anniversary, which explains the big output of Mario-related content we’ve seen lately. Uniqlo has a Super Mario clothing collection, Lego is releasing a Super Mario toyset and Nintendo themselves are reportedly remastering multiple classic Mario games for the Nintendo Switch! You can sign me up for Super Mario Galaxy, that's for sure.
