Steam Machines chugging to retail later this year
We'd almost given up hope on seeing Steam Machines but it turns out they're coming after all! Pop in and take a look at Zotac's Steam Machine, the Zotac SN970.
Steam Machines will come in all shapes and sizes, from a range of manufacturers.
With GDC 2015 in full swing, announcements from the gaming industries top players are coming in fast and furious. Unreal Engine 4 being free, a new NVIDIA Shield Android console and a whole host of other revelations. Valve alone deserves their own news section for the amount of stuff they've unveiled but we'll be focusing instead on Steam Machines for this news piece.
One of the more noteworthy (and surprising) news from Valve at GDC 2015 is that Steam Machines are nearly here. They'll be out from November onward. At least that's the current plan barring any other complications. Seeing as how the Steam Machines come from a host of manufacturers, delays shouldn't really be an issue so the November date looks to be rock solid.
Steam Machines, in case anybody's forgotten, are Valve's stab at killing off consoles and bringing PCs to the living room. Announced more than two years ago, Steam Machines vanished from the radar the past few months, leading many people into thinking that they might end up being vaporware. Today's announcement of a concrete release (as well as a Steam Machine from Zotac) should put minds at ease. Steam Machines are real and they're coming.
Here's the Zotac Steam Machine we mentioned earlier. Zotac's calling it the ZOTAC SN970.
The Zotac SN970 is based off Zotac's ZBox EN760.
The Zotac SN970 lacks DiplayPorts, as well as Thunderbolt ports.
Unfortunately, no mention was made of the dimensions of Zotac's machine.
Apart from those specs and the name, Zotac's also revealed that the Zotac SN970 comes with the Steam Controller. The Steam Controller will retail for US$50 seperately when it releases in November, though Valve promises pricing for other regions nearer its release.
As for the SN970, Zotac didn't mention the pricing or release date for the SN970, but with other Steam Machines releasing in November, the Zotac SN970 will probably launch during that window.
