Sony is increasing the price of PlayStation 5 consoles in Japan by 20%

The standard edition is still cheaper there than in Singapore. #sony #playstation5 #biginjapan

For some time, getting a PlayStation 5 from a Yodobashi outlet in Japan meant you’re getting one of the “cheapest” PS5 console from anywhere in the world – thanks to tax-free discounts for tourists, credit card rebates or discounts and a weaken yen.

Not quite anymore.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that it will be raising PS5 prices in Japan starting from 2 September 2024. This is now the third PS5 price hike in that country since the console launched in 2020. The yen has weakened against the US and Sing dollars for a while now, and Sony says the “fluctuations in the global economic situation” is responsible for this latest PS5 price increase.

The standard PlayStation 5 and digital-only PlayStation 5 consoles now retail with a suggested retail price of ¥79,980 (est. S$722) and ¥72,980 (est. S$659) respectively. Tax included. A quick check at the Sony and Challenger’s online stores show that the standard PS5 sells for S$735 (usual $799) while the digital edition goes for S$605 (usual $669) on both sites.

A bit of math now shows that the digital edition is better purchased in Singapore, although you might still enjoy some savings with the standard PS5 when purchasing it in Japan.
