Konami recently announced some surprising news for their popular football game franchise, eFootball Pro Evolution Soccer.

While the football sim series still has a new game coming out this year, development has shifted focus to a next-gen PES game using the Unreal Engine. The series had previously used the Fox Engine, which was also used to make Metal Gear Solid V.

Announced via a blog update, Konami assured players that they can expect, “more realistic player models and animations, enhanced physics, photorealistic visuals, and much much more.” The next-gen game will also include ‘large updates’ for the myClub and Master League modes.

However, Konami did state that fans of the franchise will have to settle for something much less grand this year. Instead of a fully-fledged new PES game, we’re getting eFootball PES 2021 Season Update in September. It’s still a standalone game, but it’ll be released at a lower ‘anniversary price’ with several bonuses. It probably won’t be much of an upgrade over PES 2020, either.

eFootball PES 2021 Season Update will launch on September 15, 2020 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam. The new next-generation PES game will likely launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, but only in late 2021.
