NVIDIA today announced the GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics card, its new second-generation Maxwell graphics card meant to occupy the performance space between the GeForce GTX 980 and the Titan X.

Unlike 2013’s NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti which was faster than the original GeForce GTX Titan, the GeForce GTX 980 Ti features a cut-down version of the GM200 GPU on the Titan X, with 22 Streaming Multiprocessors (SMM) versus the full 24 on the Titan X, but much more than the 16 SMM units on the GeForce GTX 980. It also has 2816 CUDA cores and 176 texture units, 38% more than the GeForce GTX 980.

The reference card sports a similar cooling shroud to the Titan X, save for its slate gray coloring instead of black. It also has the same blower-style cooling fan installed. Round the back, the features three DisplayPort outputs, one HDMI port and one dual-link DVI port.

Other notable features of the card include 6GB of GDDR5 video memory and a 384-bit memory bus width for a total memory bandwidth of 336.5GB/s, priming it for performance in memory-hungry 4K games and VR applications.

According to NVIDIA, the GeForce GTX 980 Ti is approximately twice as fast as the GeForce GTX 680, but this scales up to 3x the performance of the Kepler card at 4K resolutions. NVIDIA has designed the new card to really shine at ultra-high resolutions, and it is targeted at gamers who want to enjoy playable framerates at 4K with just a single card.

Finally, the card will also support DirectX 12 feature level 12.1 alongside all second-generation Maxwell cards (GeForce GTX 960 and up), which brings support for features like Volume Tiled Resources and Conservative Raster for more efficient performance and realistic graphics.

The GeForce GTX 980 Ti will retail for US$649 with a free copy of Batman: Arkham Knight to further sweeten the deal, while the GeForce GTX 980 comes down in price to US$499 (formerly US$549). Custom cards from add-in card manufacturers are expected to follow soon, so stay tuned for our news updates.
