It’s been a long wait, but fans of classic JRPGs can finally mark their calendars: Konami’s remaster editions of the revered Suikoden I & II will be released on 6 March 2025. Titled Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Dawn and Dunan Unification Wars, it will be available available on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Konami also released a new trailer, which revealed a couple of tweaks that aim to make the gameplay a bit snappier. There’s now an option to speed up combat to 2x or 4x the normal speed – a handy feature for those who’d rather not slog through every random encounter – and an auto-battle button, for when you just want to sit back and watch your party do its thing.

It’s been a bit of a journey for this remaster. Originally announced in 2022 with a planned release in 2023, the collection promised a fresh coat of paint for the beloved titles, including new visual effects, updated pixel sprites, and enhanced environment art. Character portraits have also been given a facelift, with those from the first game completely redrawn in HD. Konami also mentioned some other small but meaningful improvements, like a dialogue log and better sound design – little things that should make a big difference to the overall experience.

However, the wait was extended when Konami pushed back the release almost a year ago, vaguely citing the need for more time to "ensure quality". The lack of a new release date at the time left fans like me wondering just when we can get our hands on this remastered set of classics.

For those not in the know, Suikoden is a name that carries a fair bit of weight among RPG enthusiasts. The series first made waves on the original PlayStation back in the late '90s, with all five mainline games launching between 1995 and 2006. It’s best known for its massive casts – over 100 characters to recruit in each game – and for Suikoden II, which is often mentioned in the same breath as the genre’s heavy hitters. I’m really curious if Konami will extend the HD remastering treatment to Suikoden III, if only to revisit that game’s epic CG opening and theme song with a modern graphics coating.
