Apart from awarding titles that have shaped the gaming landscape this year, a large part of The Game Awards 2024 also consisted of teasers, trailers and announcements of new games set to arrive in the future. From long-awaited sequels to new titles, take a look at some of the announcements made at this year's The Game Awards:

The Witcher 4

Premiering at The Game Awards 2024, this next installment in the Witcher series follows 2015's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Developed by CD Projekt Red on Unreal Engine 5, the six-minute trailer for The Witcher 4 notably reveals a new protagonist set to take the helm: Ciri, the adopted daughter of previous Witcher protagonist Geralt. We've seen her as a major character in The Witcher 3, and though her appearance here brings about a bunch of lore implications, such a major shift signifies CD Projekt Red's intentions to redefine the series as it launches a new Witcher saga.

The first game announcement at The Game Awards 2024, it doesn't give us much in terms of a release date. The only information we get outside of the trailer is CD Projekt Red's promise that The Witcher 4 "aims to be the most immersive and ambitious open-world Witcher game to date".

Borderlands 4

The first game in the mainline series since 2019, this Borderlands 4 trailer follows the teaser that first premiered on August earlier this year. The original teaser showcased the arrival of Elpis, a moon of Pandora and one of Borderlands' previous settings, to the new planet of Kairos, breaking a protective barrier.

This new trailer shows the aftermath of the teaser, as you play as one of four Vault Hunters landing on Kairos in the midst of a rising conflict against the oppressive Timekeeper, who looks set to take on an antagonist role in the game. Other blink-and-you'll-miss-it parts of the trailer include the designs of the new Vault Hunters, vehicles, weapons and what looks to be an energy grappling hook.

We do have some information for Borderlands 4 as well; the game, playable in single-player or co-op is set to release in 2025 (you can wishlist it on Steam now), and will be released for PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.

Elden Ring Nightreign

Elden Ring is not going away anytime soon, but Elden Ring Nightreign is changing up the formula. The game is a multiplayer spin-off of Elden Ring that sees you taking on monsters that fit right into the setting, featuring three player co-op and what looks to be hero characters with different skillsets, with the aim to take down the mysterious Nightlord.

Nightreign is a standalone game that takes place in the Elden Ring universe, and is set to release in 2025 for PC through Steam, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.

Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet

From Naughty Dog, the developer behind Uncharted and The Last of Us, comes a new game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. In the works since 2020, the sci-fi game follows a bounty hunter stranded on the planet of Sempiria as she attempts to leave the planet's orbit.

Much of the story after that is shrouded in mystery, but we do get a few clues about what this world is like, including the description of the year 1986 as "ancient", as well as some strangely placed Sony and Porsche product placement. Also notable was the announcement of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross as composers for the game; together they're known for composing some award-winning soundtracks, including Soul (with Jon Baptiste) and The Social Network (an Academy Award winning score).

Being a reveal trailer, much of the details about this game are unknown as well, other than it's being developed for PS5, which means it may be an exclusive.

Helldivers 2: Omens of Tyranny

Another trailer for a Game Awards nominee, Omens of Tyranny is the next big update for Helldivers 2, importantly adding a new alien faction to the game, the Illuminate. As they initiate an invasion of Super Earth planets, players get to fight in new settings, including urban environments, not just against the Illuminate but also the Voteless, civilians being mind-controlled by the Illuminate. It also features the Fast Recon Vehicle, a new speedy vehicle fit for navigating these new environments.

Unlike the others on this list, this update is out now for Helldivers 2.

The Outer Worlds 2

Having been announced years ago, and coming five years after the release of the original Outer Wilds, Obsidian has released a new trailer for The Outer Worlds 2, the sequel to its original sci-fi game, which we described as one of 2019's strongest RPGs. Apart from some tongue-in-cheek references to Obsidian's penchant for developing sequels for IPs it doesn't own, the trailer showcases Outer Worlds 2 gameplay for the first time, including a comic sequence of a different kinds of kills achievable with the weapons in the game.

This trailer also gives us new information; The Outer Worlds is set to release in 2025 for PC via Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.

Dispatch

Breaking the sci-fi streak on this list is Dispatch, an original developed by AdHoc Studios, comprised of former developers from Telltale Games. The adventure game sees you take on the role of a former superhero, seeking to reclaim his former glory as he now works an office job as a dispatcher, sending superheroes to help in different crises.

From the trailer, it does look like it's a spiritual successor to Telltale's formula of narrative-driven games. Superhero content is abundant in the current pop culture zeitgeist, but the concept of a superhero dispatcher is interesting.

Helping this is the strange but star-studded cast AdHoc has put together; Aaron Paul (who got an Emmy Award as Jesse from Breaking Bad) plays the main lead, and is joined by Academy Award-nominee Jeffrey Wright and prolific voice actress Laura Bailey. Other voice actors and actresses include Erin Yvette, Alanah Pearce, and Internet personalities Jacksepticeye, Moistcr1tikal and Joel Haver.

Split Fiction

Finally, Split Fiction is a new two-player co-op game developed by Hazelight Studios and directed by Josef Fares, the ones behind It Takes Two, the GOTY of 2021's Game Awards.

The trailer provides a lot information about the game: You play two writers, Mio and Zoe, who hope to get picked up by a publisher who can create simulations of their stories. As they accidentally enter the same simulation, they fight to leave while their stories get stolen by their publisher.

The big draw of the game is the sheer variety of worlds you can enter; as Mio and Zoe respectively write sci-fi and fantasy, the game's levels alternates between these two genres, with unique mechanics introduced in every level.

If that intrigues you, the trailer also gives release information for this game as well; Split Fiction comes out on March 6 2025 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Similar to It Takes Two, there's also a Friend's Pass, which means that if you're playing with a friend, only one person needs to buy the full game.

Other Announcements

These weren't the only announcements at The Game Awards 2024. More reveals included a teaser trailer for Okami 2, the sequel to the 2006 Japanese mythology-inspired Capcom game, Mafia: The Old Country, a new entry into the Mafia series set in 1900s Sicily, Stage Fright, a co-op escape room made by the creators of Overcooked, and Palworlds new Feybreak DLCProject Century, the working title for a Yakuza-esque gritty action game developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku and set in 1915 Japan, also premiered its first trailer at The Game Awards 2024.
