Apple Arcade's TMNT Splintered Fate is a Hades-inspired adventure with a Ninja Turtles twist
TMNT Splintered Fate is part of a broader effort to bring the Ninja Turtles to video games.
TMNT Splintered Fate introduces a fresh roguelike adventure for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, bearing a striking resemblance to Supergiant Games' Hades. This unique spin on the genre features the iconic turtles as playable characters and incorporates cooperative gameplay.
The story revolves around the turtles' search for their missing mentor, Master Splinter. Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael navigate the rooftops, streets, and sewers of New York to find him, unraveling the mystery behind his disappearance. The game boasts an "evolving narrative," co-authored by Super Evil Mergacorp's creative director Kevin Michael Johnson and comic book writer Tom Waltz. Throughout their journey, the turtles encounter allies like April O'Neil, Metalhead, and Casey Jones, who provide clues about Splinter's location.
As a roguelike game, TMNT Splintered Fate offers randomised power-ups, enabling the turtles to enhance their unique combat abilities with each run. The trailer reveals selectable power-ups, including area-of-effect flame strikes, faster attacks, and increased damage at low health. The game also incorporates an evolving progression and further randomization, such as changing room layouts and boss modifiers to keep battles interesting.
In a Q&A session with HWZ, Johnson explained that each turtle has a distinct basic attack and tool, which can be swapped for others to create versatile and diverse gameplay experiences. He also confirmed that while the rooms are fixed, their sequence and the enemies within them change based on the player's progress and overall game difficulty.
TMNT Splintered Fate is part of a broader effort to bring the Ninja Turtles to video games. This initiative includes the retro game compilation Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection and the throwback beat-'em-up Shredder's Revenge. Paramount also plans to release a AAA adaptation of the graphic novel The Last Ronin. Additionally, Shredder recently made an appearance as an Operator in Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0.
The turtles will also star in a new animated movie and participate in a Stranger Things crossover later this year. Super Evil Megacorp, the developer behind mobile hits like the MOBA Vainglory and battleground shooter Catalyst Black, is responsible for creating TMNT Splintered Fate. The game is currently available on Apple Arcade and can be played on Apple TV, iOS, and Mac computers.
