Fresh out of Gamescom 2025, currently taking place in Germany, the award-winning Black Myth: Wukong is getting a new game, titled Black Myth: Zhong Kui. Featuring the titular Chinese deity, the game is set to follow in Wukong’s footsteps as a single-player action RPG.

Not much is known about the game’s story for now, but it’s adapting a rather interesting part of Chinese legend. Zhong Kui, as a mythological figure, dates back to the Tang dynasty, and is said to be a hunter and conqueror of ghosts and evil spirits alike.

And it seems that Game Science, the developer behind the Black Myth series, is keeping close to that characterisation of Zhong Kui. Revealing the trailer to the crowd at Gamescom, the convention’s opening night host Geoff Keighley calls Zhong Kui “the ghost-catching god who wanders between hell and earth.”

Take a look at the trailer that was shown off at Gamescom here:

The choice to feature Zhong Kui as the protagonist is in contrast to Black Myth: Wukong, which had its narrative basis in the famous Chinese tale Journey to the West. Zhong Kui has no overt ties to that story, which was published in China long after Zhong Kui became part of the Taoist pantheon.

At the very least, the developers seem intent on focusing on a different Chinese folklore figure. According to Game Science’s website for Black Myth: Zhong Kui, the studio is aiming “to build more distinct game experiences, to challenge [themselves] with bolder features, and to bring fresh ideas to our world and narrative design,” and that “Zhong Kui came as a natural choice born of that aspiration and other contributing factors.”

It also addressed fans of Black Myth: Wukong, stating that “the westward journey won’t end here,” which could point to a proper Wukong sequel in the future.

For now, though, this is as much as we know about the game. It currently has no release date, and the only indication of the platforms it’ll arrive on are PC and “all mainstream console platforms.”
