Behind the game is Battlefield Studios, a collective of four game studios co-developing the title.

After leaks intensified over the past couple of weeks, Electronic Arts (EA) has pulled back the curtain on the latest installment of its longstanding FPS series, Battlefield 6, releasing the first trailer for the upcoming game. And while it doesn’t show off much in terms of gameplay, it does set the stage for what the world in Battlefield 6 looks like, which is to say, perilous.
Compared to the last few Battlefield games, Battlefield 6 looks to be bringing the series back to a contemporary time period. The trailer sees the NATO alliance falling apart in the face of Pax Armata, a private military corporation funded by former NATO states. And in between all of that geopolitical tension is your classic Battlefield spectacle.

Importantly, this trailer concerns the game’s single-player campaign, which makes its re-appearance following Battlefield 6’s multiplayer-only predecessor, Battlefield 2042. The latter, which was released back in 2021, ended up with negative reception upon its release, to put it lightly.
While we can only speculate whether this is a response to the backlash against Battlefield 2042, Battlefield 6’s development comes after a behind-the-scenes change-up. DICE has typically been the main developer in charge of the series, but this time, it’s sharing that spot with game studios Criterion, Ripple Effect and Motive, which collectively form Battlefield Studios. Each of the developers have prior ties to the FPS series, along with other EA franchises.
The formation of Battlefield Studios was announced earlier this year with this video, which could be considered Battlefield 6’s soft launch. DICE and Motive primarily handled the multiplayer experience, while Criterion and Ripple Effect worked on the single-player campaign and creating new experiences for Battlefield fans, respectively.

Battlefield 6 is also the first game to be developed after Battlefield Labs, an initiative by the developers to collect community feedback, was made open to the public. For context, Battlefield Labs had players test specific focus areas in Battlefield 6. These focus areas ranged from core aspects of gameplay, such as combat, weapons and destruction, to other features like game modes and maps.
If you’re curious about the multiplayer, you’ll have to wait a week more, as there’ll be a separate multiplayer reveal happening on 31 July. This trailer also doesn’t give us a release window, though we do have an idea of what platforms the game will be available on: PC via Steam and Epic Games Store, as well as PlayStation and Xbox. You can wishlist Battlefield 6 on these platforms now.
And a word on the console releases. Although EA didn’t specify which generation of consoles the game would appear on, the Xbox listing says that Battlefield 6 will only be available on Xbox Series X and S (first noted in a report by Insider Gaming). If that’s the case, it seems like last generation consoles will be missing out on the game.
