HardwareZone turns 20 as Singapore celebrates its 53rd birthday!
By Vijay Anand - on 09 Aug 2018, 3:34pm

Would you believe my first review is a Matrox G200 graphics card in August 1998?

Can you believe this was your typical digital photo capture capability 20 years ago? #Woah

But yes, HardwareZone become a bonafide geek's hangout in 1998 across all ages who came together for their common interest in DIY computing/gaming and the rest is history as they say. Competition was aplenty those days, but we persevered to stand out as the only truly made-in Singapore tech publication that exists today - both online and in print (HWM). It also helps that we're one of the few tech publications in the world that built-up our own little ecosystem of services to foster a community. Did you know we used to run FileAxis, BubbleZone and even offered email? (More on our heritage later.)

Fast track to 2018, we turn 20 this year and we're still going strong. In fact, we've just landed a new award for the best engagement strategy by a media owner, which is a great affirmation for what we've been doing all along. It wasn't a smooth year though, so here are our highlights of this whirlwind year to-date:-

  • January 2018:  The year started off bright with our earliest ever Tech Awards event to honor the best in the tech industry. To accompany this year's event, we prepared a new mini video series that captures the essence and spirit of the team working tirelessly behind the scenes. We've also been told that our video entertainment is the highlight every year's event, so don't forget to catch all our videos here.

  • February 2018: Just after CNY , we got hit with a hacking incident (which indirectly set the state of affairs online for the rest of the year).

  • March 2018: This following month, we rolled out measures to spruce up site-wide security. We also kick started our 20th-anniversary campaign during IT Show 2018.

  • April 2018: After 8 years at Ayer Rajah and the next decade at Media Center in 82 Genting Lane, HardwareZone was involved in a massive office move along with SPH Magazines and settled into our new home within SPH News Center.

This is just one of our test/storage rooms that we had to pack... we've a few more.

Fortunately, I had good help.

  • August 2018: HardwareZone celebrates its 20th anniversary along with the Singapore's 53rd birthday on 9th August. To commemorate this occasion, we've got more actives lined up in our forum later this month, so do keep a look out for it :)

Our story to-date...

We've documented out first 10 years of operation in great detail (and don't forget to check this list for even more nostalgia). For a more compact edition of our story, we've compiled that into a milestones edition when we turned 15 to get you up to speed quickly.

Where are we heading?

We go where technology goes.

Cos someone wanted to know my striking distance. Thank you, AR measure app, now I know.

Today, technology is imbued into every corner, nook, and cranny. It's no longer just about computing, but it's the base for which tech is developed, progressed and packaged into ever more unassuming everyday gear. We are very much living in a connected, IoT world. As such, look out for more stories related to the growing discussions on smart home, connected home appliances, smart city initiatives and even the automotive segment. We’ll also be covering evolving topics, including the A.I. & robotics when there are key innovations that trigger progress. This is why you see more stories related to home appliances (like smart washing machines, cordless vacuums, etc.), self-driving cars, electric cars and car reviews that are published on HardwareZone.

This is Tesla's first electric truck called the Semi, and if all goes as planned it will debut sometime in 2019 with semi-autonmous drive capabilities. You won't believe how much technology goes into making this awesome cordless handstick vacuum a joy to use.

Let's not forget the gaming industry that has overturned conventional expectations upside down and why gaming is a key driver to advance the tech industry - this is why we are in union with GameAxis to cover the full tech landscape.

HardwareZone has come a long way from the early days and you can be sure we'll be around as we evolve our content and services to keep you informed and connected with other like-minded readers. So stick around, enjoy the ride with us and thank you for your support!

Have a Happy National Day!
