HTC Desire Won't Get Gingerbread Update

HTC Desire owners, we've got some unfortunate news for you. While the Gingerbread update has been delivered to the HTC Desire HD and Desire Z as promised in Q2 2011, it seems like the HTC Desire will not be getting the Android 2.3 update after all. In a post on HTC UK's Facebook page, the company has announced that it has "been working hard for the past few months to find a way to bring Gingerbread to the HTC Desire without compromising the HTC Sense experience". Unfortunately, its engineering team has finally accepted the fact that there just isn't enough memory to bring both the Gingerbread and HTC Sense experience onto the Desire.

GSM Arena - Bad news HTC Desire owners, HTC has just announced it won’t update the original Desire with Android 2.3 Gingerbread due to insufficient memory. You are now stuck with Froyo forever.

Truth is, the features that matter, such as wireless tethering and Adobe Flash support, are already available on Android 2.2. But if you still wish to enjoy the Gingerbread experience on your HTC Desire, there's always custom ROMs for you to work with.
