Intel revealed design plans of its new 22nm system-on-a-chip (SoC) that will feature 3D Tri-gate transistors, in line with their Ivy Bridge counterparts. The company outlined this new microarchitecture for its SoC in a paper presented at the 2012 International Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM).

Intel has shipped its 60-core Xeon Phi coprocessor to selected customers. First unveiled in June this year, the coprocessor comes in the form of a PCIe expansion card and operates independently of the host operating system, courtesy of its own Linux operating system that manages each x86 core.

Intel is working on a 48-core processor for smartphones and tablets. The company's focus on this project is to find new ways to manage and use multiple cores in mobile devices. According to the project researchers, this massive multi-core CPU could be ready in five to ten years.

Intel is rumored to be working on the next generation of Atom processors that are targeted at powering micro servers. Dubbed Avoton, this upcoming system-on-a-chip (SoC) will be based on 22nm Silvermont architecture and feature up to eight cores that share 4MB of L2 cache (1MB per core).
