Google recently announced a new extension (Chrome Office Viewer) for Google Chrome that lets you open Microsoft Office files directly on the web browser. Files are also sandboxed to prevent compromised Microsoft Office files from causing any damage to your computer system.

Google has announced that Andy Rubin will be stepping down as head of Android. His duties will be merged into those of Sundar Pichai, who is currently senior VP of Chrome and Apps.

The Google Chrome team has released an update to the Android version of Chrome. Changes include the ability to have music from a web app continue playing while Chrome is running in the background. Hit the link for more information.

Upcoming Firefox builds will be blocking third party cookies by default. Firefox currently has a "do not track" extension, but many third party advertisers simply ignore the "do not track" requests of the extension and leave a cookie behind anyway.

There's a Chrome OS screenshot posted by a developer that shows a new messaging service from Google. There's no official word on what it really is, but it contains notifications from at least three different Google services, which would qualify it as a unified messaging system.
