Mozilla is backtracking on its decision to kill the 64-bit version of Firefox due to heavy backlash from users of the browser. Just last month, managing engineer Benjamin Smedberg requested developers stop development on the project's nightly builds of its 64-bit Windows distribution.

Mozilla has quietly ended its development of Firefox 64-bit for Windows. There were a number of reasons given by the project manager that included the scarcity of plug-ins in 64-bit version, stability issues with the 64-bit builds as well as a general sense of mediocrity among users and testers.

According to Mr. Asa Dotzler who is the Product Director for the Firefox desktop browser, Microsoft will restrict third-party browsers from accessing certain APIs on Windows 8 ARM devices, dealing a serious blow to the planned release of their Metro-style Windows 8 version of Firefox.
