Research firm IDC has revised down its PC shipments estimates for the year. Initially, the firm expected shipment levels to decline by 9.7%; however, this figure has been adjusted to 10.7%. According to IDC, this marks the most severe yearly contraction.

Lenovo, the current global leader in terms of PC shipments, reported their smartphone and tablet sales have outstripped their PC shipment. According to the New York Times, the company shipped 12.9 million units of smartphones and tablets; while PC units numbered at 12.6 million.

PC shipments have continued to decline since they registered their sharpest drop in the first quarter of this year. According to data from IDC and Gartner, their global shipment levels have dropped roughly 11% in Q2, year-on-year. Lenovo is the top PC vendor now, taking the crown from HP.

Research firm IDC has released its first quarter PC shipment estimates for this year and it registered a sharp decline of 13.9 per cent from the same period in 2012. This is the steepest year-over-year decline since IDC began tracking the PC market's quarterly performance in 1994.
