Samsung has announced two additions to its high performance Series 7 PC lineup - the enhanced Series 7 Chronos, which delivers professional performance in a thin and light form factor, and the Series 7 Ultra, which takes Ultrabooks to the next level with enriched computing power, graphics and touch capability.

Western Digital has unveiled its new solid state hard drives meant for ultrabooks. These new thin solid state drives measure 5mm and 7mm in thickness respectively and will be launched under the company's WD Blue and Black product lines. These drives were first announced in September last year.

The shipments of SSDs have risen sharply this year despite weak ultrabook sales. This is according to iSuppli who expects this trend to continue as these flash memory-based drives become increasingly common in non-budget notebooks and desktop PCs by the latter half of this decade.

Western Digital has created a 5mm-thick hybrid HDD for ultrabooks. This 500GB drive utilizes MLC NAND flash storage with a mechanical drive to offer performance gains comparable to a dedicated SSD while retaining the capacity and cost benefits found in a standard HDD.
