Microsoft has revealed more details about the upcoming Windows 8.1 update. It packs features galore, including more personalization options, more powerful search, greater cloud connectivity, more ways to use apps side-by-side, Internet Explorer 11 with tab syncing across devices, and a Windows Logo Start 'tip'.

At JP Morgan's Technology, Media & Telecom Conference, Microsoft's Windows Division CMO and CFO, Tami Reller, confirmed that the upcoming Windows 8 update, previously codenamed Windows Blue, has now been given the official release name Windows 8.1, and will be a free upgrade for all Windows 8 users.

Microsoft has confirmed that it's working with PC OEMs to develop smaller Windows 8 tablets. But there's no word on whether a 7 or an 8-inch member will be added to the Surface family.

According to ZDNet, Windows Blue will be officially named as Windows 8.1. As we have reported in August last year, the Redmond software giant has alleged plans in the pipeline to speed up the release cycle of their new Windows operating system. This development is in line with its decision.
