ZTE: We See Opportunity to Take Market Share Away from Samsung

As one of the top five smartphone manufacturers in the world, ZTE has confidence that it can compete against Samsung and nip away at the Korean company's market share in the near future.

During the launch event of three smartphones in Bali, Mr. Ni Fei was sharing his thoughts on the two dominant players - Apple and Samsung - in the smartphone industry. Calling Apple fans "religious" and the Cupertino-based company's culture as "special", Mr. Ni stated that it is difficult for anyone to compete against Apple. However, he doesn't have such kind words for Samsung.

Citing feedback from consumers in Indonesia, Mr. Ni said that ZTE's smartphones can be better than Samsung in display and imaging technologies. He even foresees Samsung's market share dipping in the near future and this would be an opportunity for ZTE to capture some market share.

Is ZTE trying to bite off more than it can chew? IDC reported earlier that Samsung shipped a whopping 314 million smartphones in 2013. In comparison, ZTE shipped about 40 million smartphones in the same time frame and is aiming for 60 million this year.

ZTE added that its partnerships with over 320 telcos and distributors in more than 160 countries and regions will put it in a good position to enter more markets and tackle difficult ones such as Singapore where high-end models are the hot favorites and its branding is yet to established.

ZTE is expanding its presence in South East Asia with the launch of three smartphones.
