Razer buys smartphone maker Nextbit

Razer is on a buying spree. Late last year, the gaming laptop maker acquired audio company THX. Now, it has bought smartphone startup Nextbit.

For the uninitiated, Nextbit is the maker of that Robin phone, a cloud-centric smartphone that promises to never run out of storage. The company was started by experienced ex-Googlers who have worked on Android, and its product lead was previously from HTC. The Robin went on sale about a year ago for US$400, after a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.

According to Tom Moss, Nextbit co-founder and chief executive, Nextbit will “operate as an independent division inside Razer, focused on unique mobile design and experiences.” And while it has stopped sales of the Robin and all accessories, the company will continue to honor warranties for six more months. Software updates and security patches will also be provided through February 2018.
