Yamaha unveiled a slew of AV components at IFA recently, including the CD-N500 Network CD player with DLNA perks. Continuing their march forward at CEDIA 2012, the Japanese audio-visual hardware maker unwrapped eight new products in total, including five new AV receivers (AVRs) under their Aventage range.

However, the star of the show on Friday was none other than the Aventage BD-A1020 Universal Blu-ray player. It supports Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, SACD, DVD-Audio, DVD, and a multitude of other audio-visual formats, including DivX, MKV with DivX and H.264, MPEG PS, MPEG TS, MPEG-4, and AAC content. Although they are hardly rampant, Yamaha's inclusion of SACD and DVD-Audio in its portfolio, clearly highlights the company's focus on the audiophile community as opposed to so-called average listeners.

The universal player is equipped with built-in Wi-Fi (which the current BD-A1010 model lacks), and is friendly Netflix and YouTube video streaming. With an SRP of US$449.95, Yamaha's deck might give the Oppo BDP-93 (US$415) some food for thought, since it's regarded by many enthusiasts as the reigning virtuoso in the realm of Blu-ray playback.

The BD-A1020 also offers Full-HD Audio decoding and 1080p/24Hz playback over HDMI, as well as 2-channel down-mixed audio output. Nothing much to shout about really, but the player's 192kHz/32-bit audio DAC, Pure Direct mode (uses shortest signal route for improved sound), and 1080p playback for DVDs, might just give it the edge over entry-level BD players.

Yamaha's Aventage BD-A1020 is already on sale in the U.S., and we reckon it won't be long before it replaces the BD-A1010 here. And like the BD-A1010, app support for iOS and Android devices will be available on the BD-A1020 as well.
