Yahoo Fires COO Henrique de Castro Amidst Poor Ad Sales Results

It is now official that Yahoo's COO Henrique de Castro will be leaving the company. The former Google executive was Yahoo's first major hire under Marissa Mayer. And to snag him from Google, Yahoo had to, quite literally, break the bank by offering De Castro a generous package.

Henrique de Castro's departure comes at the back of lackluster ad sales numbers. Despite a number of acquisitions, most notably Tumblr, and company-wide changes, Yahoo still lags the industry and is expected to continue to do so as it announces its quarterly results later this month.

If you have any skepticism with regards to the firing, one only has to read Marissa's own memo to Yahoo employees.

During my own reflection, I made the difficult decision that our COO, Henrique de Castro, should leave the company. I appreciate Henrique’s contributions and wish him the best in his future endeavors.

Say what you want about Mayer, but if there is one thing that is apparent is that she is has no qualms about making bold and difficult decisions.
