Xiaomi's action camera is way cheaper than GoPro and Sony's most affordable models

Always wanted to try a GoPro or a Sony Action Cam, but are hesitating to part with the cash? Xiaomi, which is known for selling devices at near cost, has a new Yi Action Camera that costs 399 Yuan, or about S$87 based on the current exchange rate.

Made by the same company that makes the Yi Smart IP Camera, Xiaoyi’s POV cam packs a 16-megapixel Sony Exmor R backside-illuminated CMOS sensor, has a 155° wide-angle lens with an F2.8 large aperture, and an Ambarella A7LS image processor. Of course, what’s an action cam if you can’t take it for a swim? The Yi Action Camera can go into water for as deep as 40 meters with its optional waterproof casing.

Supporting up to 1080/60p video (H.264 encoding, MP4 format) and stereo recording, the camera is capable of 7 frames per second shooting and 3 to 15-second time lapse recording. A microSD card (up to 64GB) can be used on it, and Xiaomi recommends a Class 10 card. All in all, pretty decent specs for a sub-S$100 action camera. For comparison, the budget GoPro Hero costs about twice as much, and the most affordable Sony Action Cam (the HDR-AS20) costs S$300.

Expectedly, the Yi Action Camera also supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, so remote shooting and wireless file transfer via a mobile app are possible. The Android version of the app is already available, but the iOS version is only coming in April.

Available in white and green, the 72g camera can also be bought with a selfie stick for 100 Yuan more.
