Xiaomi wants to be number one smartphone maker in 10 years

Xiaomi's latest flagship phone - the Mi 4.

Xiaomi is one of the hottest stars in the mobile phone industry. The company only made its first phone three years ago, but is today the number one smartphone maker in China. According to shipping data, it overtook giants such as Samsung and Lenovo in the last quarter.

The company is now renown for its full featured and attractively priced phones. And recently releases such as its new flagship, the Mi 4, has reportedly helped Xiaomi achieved triple digit year on year growth.

In light of these recent successes, Xiaomi's CEO, Lei Jun, was not shy to state that its company aims to become the number one smartphone maker in the world in the next 10 years. He also mentioned India being a large market and huge opportunity for them.

Lei said, "I believe that no one thought the Xiaomi from three years ago, which just made its first phone, would later rank as the third largest player. India is becoming our largest overseas market. Within five or 10 years, we have the opportunity to become the number one smartphone company in the world.”

While Xiaomi does have the potential to be and stay as one of the major players in the smartphone industry, it needs to be wary of complacency. While its devices has been generally well received, recent ones such as the Note 4G was found to be a little lackluster in comparison to its earlier hits.
