Xiaomi sold 61.1 million smartphones in 2014, to enter more markets this year

Xiaomi's flash sales strategy and frequent launches of new mobile devices has paid off handsomely last year.

According to Lei Jun, CEO of Xiaomi, the company sold 61.1 million smartphone units in 2014 which exceeded his sales target of 60 million. As a point of reference to show its explosive growth last year, Xiaomi only managed to sell 18.7 million units in 2013.

Smartphone shipments also more than tripled in 2014, thanks to its aggressive overseas expansion into several markets such as Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines and India. In addition, Lei shared that Xiaomi will be entering more overseas markets this year although he did not elaborate further. Lei also shared his thoughts on the smartphone market this year:

The Wall Street Journal -  "In 2015, the smart devices playing field will become extremely competitive, especially as the growth of the smartphone industry in mainland China slows down,” Mr. Lei said. He also said the company would be launching its next flagship device later this month.

Lei reiterated the point that Xiaomi will be launching its next flagship device later this month, which is rumored to be a bigger Mi 5 smartphone. There are also speculation of an Intel-powered Mi Pad 2 in the pipeline.

The Chinese company is currently valued at more than US$46 billion after closing a funding round last month that raised US$1.1 billion. It also overtook Samsung to be the top smartphone brand in China
