Xiaomi’s 5.5-inch Redmi Note Will Have a True Octa-core Processor

The super-affordable, S$169 Xiaomi Redmi has a 4.7-inch 720p display, a MediaTek MT6589T quad-core 1.5GHz processor, an 8-megapixel rear camera, and a 2,000mAh battery. While it was only launched recently in Singapore, it’s after all from the company’s 2013 lineup (it was announced in July 2013 in China). If you’ve been resisting the phone because of that, your wait for a better Redmi will soon be over, as the Chinese company has confirmed that a new Redmi phone is coming very soon (at least in China).

Called Redmi Note, it’ll have a 5.5-inch screen and is powered by a ‘true’ octa-core processor. Since it’s part of the Redmi series, we expect good (but not top-end) specs with an attractive price. According to a recent leak (via Engadget), the Redmi Note’s 5.5-inch display is likely to have a 720p resolution just like the current Redmi. It’ll still run Android 4.2.2, and has 1GB RAM. The SoC of choice is likely to be MediaTek’s MT6592 (octa-core 1.7GHz CPU, Mali-450 MP4 GPU). It’s uncertain if Xiaomi’s ‘Note’ will come with a stylus though.

Those in China will be able to pre-order the Redmi Note at 8pm on March 19. There’s no mention of price, but it’s safe to assume that it’ll cost more (maybe just a bit?) than the 4.7-inch Redmi.
