Xiaomi overtakes Samsung to top Chinese smartphone market

According to market research firm Canalys, Xiaomi has overtaken Samsung to be the number one smartphone brand in China.

Looking at Q2's shipment figures, Xiaomi shipped a total of nearly 15 million units, while Samsung managed around 13.2 million. This gives Xiaomi a market share of 14% for Q2 with Samsung trailing slightly behind with 12%. Lenovo and Yulong follows very closely behind having shipped 13 million and 12.7 million units respectively.

These are remarkable figures considering Xiaomi only had a 10% market share in Q1. A year ago, the company's market share stood at just 5%. The company is on a roll and its new flagship Mi4 phone is expected to go on sale very soon.

And this latest finding corroborates with recent reports regarding Samsung's business troubles. Just last week, Samsung reported that profits for its mobile division dipped an alarming 71% in Q3.
