Xiaomi is taking on the Amazon Echo, Google Home and Apple's HomePod with its Mi AI speaker which costs a fraction of their price.

The Mi AI speaker has a six-microphone array with an omni-directional microphone for delivering excellent sound quality. It also has advanced echo cancellation and allows you to control it via voice. You can access its massive online content which includes music, audio books and live radio. Similar to other smart speakers, Xiaomi positions the Mi AI speaker as a hub to connect and control other devices.

It is inviting third party developers to create apps for the Mi AI speaker and has launched a beta program where 1,000 recruited users pay 1 yuan (~S$0.20) to test the smart speaker. Xiaomi hopes to improve the AI system of the smart speaker through the beta program.

The Mi AI speaker will go on sale in China next month with a price tag of 299 yuan (~S$60), which is ridiculously cheap compared to the US$349 (~S$482) Apple HomePod, US$179.99 (~S$245) Amazon Echo and US$129 (~S$175) Google Home
