Just when you think that smartphone prices can't go any lower, Xiaomi just announced an entry-level smartphone below US$100 which was leaked just last week!

Known as the Redmi 2A, the smartphone runs on a quad-core Leadcore L1860C processor with 1GB RAM and a 2,200mAh battery. Other specs include a 4.7-inch 720p IPS display, an 8-megapixel rear camera, 8GB internal storage space, dual-SIM support and even 4G LTE connectivity.

Xiaomi states that the Redmi 2A will be available for purchase in China on April 8, which is Mi Fan's Festival Day. Its official retail price is 599 yuan (US$96 or about ~S$132), but it will be going on sale at a special price of 499 yuan (US$80) for that day.

At launch, it is only available with TD-LTE support. The FDD-LTE model (which is supported by all three telcos in Singapore) will be released at a later date.

Xiaomi is most certainly breaking new grounds on the low end spectrum with a a fairly capable smartphone at such a low price point. Despite that, Nokia is probably the current budget smartphone champion with the recently launched Nokia 215 model going for just US$29.
