Xi3 Launches FreeForm dataCENT3R Project, Puts New Spin to Clustered PCs

Xi3 Corporation has unveiled its FreeForm dataCENT3R project that features up to ninety six X3i Modular Computers or Xi3 microSERV3Rs in a clustered design. This project aims to break the mold of a traditional data center setup that usually comprises servers housed in racks.

The FreeForm dataCENT3R project is a wheeled metal structure featuring seven curved steel bars framed by two side support bars and a flat metal base. The structure measures up to 94.5 inches in height (2.4m), 82.5 inches in width (2.1m), with a depth of 21.0 inches (0.5m). It can house from 48 to 96 Xi3 Modular Computers or Xi3 microSERV3Rs in a clustered deployment. According to Mr. Jason A. Sullivan, Xi3 founder, President and CEO, the FreeForm dataCENT3R project doesn't need a special room as it can be cooled by ambient air. He also wants to position the computing structure as an architectural element with the hope of working closely with customers and partners to redesign data centers.

The building blocks of this new project consists of Xi3 Modular Computers and Xi3 microSERV3Rs that are capable of running 64-bit, x86-based operating systems that include Windows 8 and lower versions, and most Linux and UNIX OS variants. Xi3 wants to position its first FreeForm dataCENT3R Project as an ideal candidate for organizations looking for a compact and aesthetically innovative mobile solution with exceptional power efficiency for clustered computing requirements, including

  • scientific modeling
  • High Performance Computing (HPC) for mathematical computations, number-crunching and supercomputing
  • symmetric, multiprocessing (SMP) systems
  • Beowulf clusters
  • distributed data centers
  • Hadoop clusters
  • Web servers
  • computer game tournament systems/solutions

Recently, Xi3 and Valve announced their collaboration that resulted in the first prototype Valve Steam Box that is a console form factor PC designed specifically to support PC Steam games on big, high-definition screens for residential and LAN party gaming.
