Xbox Live is coming to the Microsoft HoloLens

One platform to rule them all. We're really interested in seeing if Microsoft can pull it off successfully.

Microsoft is going all out to unite the fractured state of gaming. Like Nobunaga Oda, the company's unifying the different platforms (at least those that it can control) under one banner. The latest part of that scheme came with the Windows 10 and Xbox One integration, in the form of streaming Xbox One games to a Windows 10 PC. More features that involve both the Xbox One and a Windows 10 PC are in the pipeline, such as streaming PC games to the Xbox One console. But that's just the tip of the iceberg, a small part of what Microsoft envisions as the 'Universal Windows Platform'.

When Microsoft launches the HoloLens sometime in the far future, the company will also integrate that product into its existing Windows and Xbox architecture. Xbox Live, the Xbox One's subscription based online gaming service, will come lock, stock and barrel to the HoloLens. This means that every aspect of the service is coming over, which includes its apps, its features (like messaging and friend lists) and most importantly, its multiplayer gaming.

It seems that the Xbox Live API is highly versatile, and can be easily ported to various platforms, with the PC and Windows Phone versions coming very soon.

Now this doesn't mean that mainstream gaming is coming to the HoloLens, as Microsoft still hasn't officially announced a game other than Minecraft for that platform. For all we know, the only reason Xbox Live is coming to the HoloLens is for solely for Minecraft multiplayer. That's highly unlikely though.

Microsoft was coy as to when we can actually expect the HoloLens to release and was even more evasive when asked about when Xbox Live is coming to the headset, though they promised that all the features will come 'in time' to the HoloLens. With the HoloLens' Developer's Kit only shipping sometime next year, chances are we won't be seeing a consumer version of the HoloLens for at least three or four years. Look at how long it took for the Oculus Rift to come to market.
