Windows 8.1 May Bring Back the Start Menu; Allow Booting Straight to Desktop

Is the Start Menu coming back in Windows Blue?

According to research firm, IDC, the two options users have requested the most for Windows 8 are a boot-to-desktop feature and the return of the start menu. Now it seems that Microsoft may be considering adding both for its upcoming Windows 8.1 (Windows Blue) release.

Earlier this week, WinBeta posted a screenshot examining the twinui.dll file in Windows 8.1 (build 9364) showing a line of code that indicates users may be able to immediately launch into the desktop when starting Windows 8.1. Now, unnamed sources at ZDNet have apparently confirmed that, not only is Microsoft planning on letting users boot straight into the desktop, but it is also considering bringing back the Start menu as an option.

Windows 8.1 is expected to be released to manufacturing around August this year, with the public version of the preview expected to go live sometime around June.
