Windows 8.1 to Bring Outlook 2013 RT to Windows RT Devices (Update)

Windows 8.1 to Bring Outlook 2013 RT to Windows RT Devices

Update (Jun 7, 2013): Following the announcement two days ago that Outlook 2013 RT will be coming to Windows RT devices via the Windows 8.1 update, there's been some confusion on whether this app is a Windows Store Modern UI app or a desktop app. A Microsoft spokesperson has confirmed to Neowin that it'll indeed be a desktop app, though inspired by the new design language, just like Word 2013 RT and Excel 2013 RT. Over at SuperSite for Windows, Paul Thurrott has done a sneak peek of it. The good news? It looks and works the same as the version of Outlook 2013 for x86 devices.

While Windows RT tablets come with Office 2013 Home & Student RT that consists of RT-specific versions of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote, what a lot of users are craving for is Outlook. Well, at Computex, Microsoft’s CFO and CMO of the Windows Division, Tami Reller, has revealed that the upcoming free Windows 8.1 update will come with Outlook 2013 RT.

Like how it works for the current Office 2013 RT, Outlook 2013 RT will not just come on the Surface RT tablet that has Windows 8.1, but on all Windows 8.1-running Windows RT devices by Microsoft’s hardware partners as well.

Features of the new Outlook 2013 RT include a streamlined interface, inline reply, and ‘peeks’ (for quickly viewing your calendar and contacts without manually switching between tabs).

It was also revealed that 'new small screen x86 tablets' - such as the just announced Acer Iconia W3 (an 8-inch tablet running full Windows 8) - will come pre-installed with Office Home & Student 2013 (note: we're referring to the x86 version of Office, not the RT version here).

A public demo of Windows 8.1 was also given during Microsoft’s Computex keynote, touching on several of the new features that were revealed last week. A demo video is now available, and we’ve embedded it below.
