Windows 10 to be categorized as a 'recommended update' in Windows Update early next year

Since Windows 10’s launch, Microsoft has been focusing on getting Windows 7 and 8.1 users to upgrade. This hasn't changed, and in a blog post today, the company has detailed some new things it will be implementing soon to make the upgrade process even easier.

For a start, Microsoft is tweaking the Get Windows 10 taskbar notifications to be more “approachable”, “clear”, and “sometimes fun”. Also, the company is dropping the reservation system. So if you agree to the Windows 10 upgrade offer, the upgrade process will kick off immediately.

Moving forward, the Windows 10 upgrade will also be published as an “Optional Update” in Windows Update for all Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users. Then early next year, it will be re-categorized as a “Recommended Update”. Take note though, this means if you’ve configured Windows Update to install recommended updates automatically, the upgrade process will commence automatically. As Microsoft notes, you can still decline the upgrade at that point; and even if you’ve proceeded, you can roll back to your previous OS anytime during the first 31 days. For Windows 7 users who understandably don’t want to upgrade over a metered connection, you can turn off automatic updates and check Windows Update manually when you’re on a non-metered network.

For those looking to create offline media to upgrade one or more PCs, the Media Creation Tool will also be updated. Microsoft is also trying to make it easier for non-genuine Windows 7 and 8.1 systems to upgrade to Windows 10 by offering “a one-click opportunity to get Genuine via the Windows Store or by entering an activation code purchased elsewhere”. This experiment will start in the U.S. first.
