The new Steve Jobs movie, written by Aaron Sorkin and starring Michael Fassbender, has tanked at the box office, puzzling some industry watchers and movie critics.

This was despite receiving mostly positive reviews from movie reviewers and from people who first watched it earlier over the weekend during its limited released where it net the highest per theater average on opening week for the year.

Reports say that the movie grossed just US$7.3 million against earlier estimates that it would go on to make US$19 million. In its second weekend, it pulled in just US$2.58 million.

This means that it garnered a receipts of just US$1035 per theater. When it opened to a limited release weeks ago, it drew over US$130,000 per theater, so the drop is not only drastic, but surprising, to say the least.

In response, The Variety offered an explanation and said that it was too "brainy" and "cold" and the lack of a major international superstar would mean that the movie would struggle to turn a profit.

"It’s still hard to see how the film turns a profit. The picture cost $30 million to make and at least as much to market. That means that “Steve Jobs” needs to do at least $120 million in order to break even. Given that the film is dialogue-driven and lacks a major star, its foreign prospects seem bleak. It’s almost entirely a domestic play, and so far it’s only made about $10 million."

According to IMDB, the movie will come to local cinemas in January next year. Will you watch it?
