Whatsapp is now used by a billion people

With a billion people using it, WhatsApp is now one of the most used apps in the world.

WhatsApp Inc. (the company that created the app) has announced today that their popular messaging app now has one billion active users, with that number likely rising as we're typing this.

WhatsApp main rival, WeChat, reputedly has 1.1 billion accounts, though the number of active users is only around 625 million as of November 10 2015.

This means what while WeChat might have more accounts of users signed up, more people are actively using WhatsApp than WeChat. That's not surprising as WeChat is mainly focused on the Chinese market, while WhatsApp is a more globally recognized brand.

That one billion active users means that about 1/7th of the world's 7.4 billion people are using WhatsApp to communicate with each other., which makes the app one of the most used in the world, alongside the Facebook app, which has about 1.442 billion active users currently.
