Earlier in May this year, Western Digital finally announced that it has completed the acquisition of  flash memory giants SanDisk.

And it seems that it has wasted no time in putting its acquisition into good use, because Western Digital has just released its first SSDs for consumers.

The first is the WD Blue PC SSD. Available in the 2.5-inch form factor or more the compact M.2 form factor (2280), the WD Blue PC SSD is powered by Marvell's 88SS1074 controller and, unsurprisingly, uses SanDisk's 15nm TLC NAND.

Performance is typical for a mid-range SATA-based SSD with sequential read and write speeds in the region of 540MB/s and 500MB/s respectively. Random read and write performance is claimed to be up to 100k IOPs and 80k IOPs respectively.

The WD Blue PC SSD will be available in 250GB, 500GB and 1TB capacities.

Price for the WD Blue is S$139, S$259 and S$499 respectively.

The second drive is the WD Green PC SSD and it is positioned as an entry-level SSD that's targeted at bargain hunters.

Like the WD Blue PC SSD, the WD Green PC SSD is also offered in the 2.5-inch form factor and M.2 form factor (2280). It's driven by Silicon Motion's SM2256S controller and also uses SanDisk's 15nm TLC NAND.

Performance is predictably less exciting, with sequential read and write speeds claimed to be in the region of 540MB/s and 405MB/s respectively. Random read and write performance is said to be up to 37k IOPs and 63k IOPs respectively.

The WD Green PC SSD will be available only in 120GB and 240GB capacities.

Price for the WD Green is S$79 and S$129 respectively.
