Western Digital has absorbed its Green series HDDs into its Blue series. With this rebranding exercise, the company has reduced its end-consumer offerings from four to three. The Green series had the lowest specifications and they were better known for their energy efficiency; the Blue series HDDs has better performance specifications as they boast of higher spin speeds that range from 5400- to 7200rpm. In comparison, the spin speeds of the Green HDDs aren’t specified. The Red HDDs are known for their reliability, making them at home in NAS devices, while the Black series is where the top-end HDDs belong.

Therefore, in the near future, the end-consumer, who's shopping for a WD entry-level HDD, will have to scrutinize the model numbers of the Blue drives. This is to ascertain if they are paying for a HDD that hasn’t been rated to perform beyond 5400rpm (former Green HDDs) or a true Blue HDD that has higher spin speeds. Hit this link for more information on WD’s Green to Blue rebranding campaign. The page also contains detailed information on the new Blue series model numbers. Caveat emptor.
