Western Digital Announces World's First SSD+HDD Dual Drive

Even though prices of SSDs have fallen dramatically over the past year or so, they still cost a lot more than traditional hard disk drives. In addition, majority of SSDs are only offered up to 480GB or 512GB capacities - 960GB or 1TB SSDs are rare in the market. Hence, for those who require storage space, mechanical hard disk drives are still the way to go. Wouldn't it be great if we could have the best of both worlds in a single drive?

In response to that, Western Digital has just announced the WD Black 2, a two-in-one drive that combines a 120GB SSD with a 1TB hard disk drive. The drive comes in a 2.5-inch form factor and is 9.5mm thick, making it suitable for notebook upgrades. It also uses the standard SATA connector and supports the latest SATA 6Gbps interface.

It is also worth noting that the SSD and mechanical hard disk drive will appear on your system as two separate volumes, so the WD Black 2 is not like your usual hybrid HDD. This way, savvy users can have full control over what they want stored on the SSD.

The WD Black 2 is available now and retails for US$299 and comes with a 5-year warranty.
