WD includes Miracast support in new WD TV - Personal Edition

Design-wise, the new WD TV is almost exactly the same as its predecessor, the WD TV Live.

More than a year after WD announced the budget-friendly WD TV Play, the storage solutions company followed up with WD TV - Personal Edition, a refresh to the WD TV Live. Physically they are almost indistinguishable except the lack of the word 'Live' on the front. The suggested retail price is also the same, at S$169.

Features-wise, just like other products in the lineup, WD TV - Personal Edition supports streaming of various file formats (such as MP4, AVI and MOV) from a personal collection, from a USB drive, digital camera or video camcorder, or a computer on the same network. You can also stream media off YouTube, Spotify, Facebook and other supported social networks through apps. Users can also download the free WD TV Remote app to control the WD TV on supported iOS and Android devices.

What sets the Personal Edition apart from previous WD TV offerings is the support for Miracast. Miracast is a technology developed by Wi-Fi Alliance that allows secure streaming of video up to 1080p (full HD). It works by mirroring content displayed on a Miracast-certified source, such as Wi-Fi Direct supported devices running Android 4.2 Jelly Bean or later. This means that, unlike the WD TV Live, you have the option to stream DRM protected media such as DVDs and iTunes purchases to a Miracast supported display.

WD also revamped its user interface to allow more customization, such as selecting which apps to include in the home page, adding shortcuts to folders for easy access, and choosing to run certain apps at startup.
