The software revolves around "path tracing," an advanced ray tracing technique that calculates light's path as it bounces off objects in a scene.

One of the reasons Disney's animated movies look so realistic is because Hyperion is capable of producing images with indirect illumination where light is reflecting off virtual objects. Even light that reflects several times (called multi-bounce light) has an impact on the scene, incorporating subtle and not-so-subtle lighting effects.
