VideoLAN, developers of popular video player VLC, has issued a statement saying that the iOS version of VLC will once again be available in the Apple App Store. This will be the first time VLC will appear in the App Store since it was removed in 2011.

According to Cult of Mac, the look of the app remains largely unchanged, with all of the changes happening under the hood. The app had been completely rewritten from the ground up, which means it's more streamlined for working on iOS, allowing it to be more efficient and faster.

VideoLAN also said that the player is able to play all file formats (especially MKV), just like the desktop version of VLC. This versatility is the reason why VLC is a popular desktop app for watching videos.

On top of being able to play almost all sorts of file formats, the revamped VLC app also has some addition features like Dropbox integration among others. Below is a list of new features in VLC for iOS:

  • Play all files, in all formats, including exotic ones, like classic VLC media player.
  • Play MKV, multiple audio tracks (including 5.1), and subtitles tracks (including SSA!).
  • Support for network streams, including HLS, MMS or RTSP.
  • Include video filters, playback speed manipulation, and fine seeking.
  • A video media library, with WiFi Upload, Dropbox integration and optional passcode lock.
  • Integration for bluetooth headsets and AirPlay.
  • Supports iOS 5.1 or later including the first iPad.
  • Completely free, libre and open source.

In case you were wondering, VLC was pulled from the App Store in 2011 because VideoLan -- the original developers of VLC -- issued a take down notice to Apple. The port at the time was made by Applidium, who apparently violated VideoLAN's copyrights and licenses by building the app.
