VESA Announces DockPort as Official Extension to Existing DisplayPort Standard

VESA has announced DockPort as an official extension to the existing DisplayPort standard. DockPort is a nascent technology that “enables high-speed USB 3.0 data over the existing DisplayPort connector."

According to VESA, DockPort is jointly developed by AMD, Texas Instruments and other VESA members. It will allow notebook, tablets and other small form factor computing devices to integrate display and data interfaces “into a single, convenient connector.” Besides this development, it appears the power delivery capability of the new DockPort is in the works. At the recently concluded CES 2014, one of the AMD Mullins APU-based nano PCs on display, showcases the DockPort technology, with a DockPort breakout box that offers USB 3.0 and HDMI connectivity.

VESA expects the DockPort extension specification to be finalized by Q2 of this year. Since this technology is royalty-free, like DisplayPort, it should be commonly adopted by manufacturers. Compared to the Thunderbolt interconnect technology, the DockPort may be seen as a more economical avenue to bring the convenience of a single connection, without the need for expensive cables and adapters.
