Unable to Update to Windows 8.1? Here’s a Fix
Yes, we know that the latest version of Windows is Windows 8.1 Update 1. But you’ve to pity the folks who are still running Windows 8/RT 8.0 (gosh, it’s been almost two years already?), and are unable to even update to Windows 8.1, because somehow the update over Windows Store fails to work.
If you’re one of the unlucky ones who are facing this problem, there’s now a fix. Via Paul Thurrott over at Supersite for Windows, Microsoft has released a new automatic update in select markets (to be rolled out soon in other markets) to solve this problem.
To get this update, just fire up Windows Update; you should see the update listed there. If it doesn’t show up, you can download it manually, though so far, only the link for the Windows RT version is found. Also, you need to install update 2871389 before you install the fix.
You know, come to think of it, this (the flakiness of the Windows Store update mechanism) is probably one of the reasons why Microsoft deployed the recent Windows 8.1 Update 1 over Windows Update instead of the Windows Store.
