Ubuntu Seeking US$32 Million on Indiegogo for its First Smartphone

Ubuntu Seeking US$32 Million Pledge on Indiegogo for its First Smartphone

Popular Linux-based OS developer Ubuntu is aiming to crowdfund its first smartphone, the Ubuntu Edge, by raising US$32 Million in funds on Indiegogo.

Ubuntu is calling its Edge smartphone a "superphone" and aims for it to be "a proving ground for the most advanced mobile technologies on the horizon, a showpiece for true mobile innovation."

While it's a little smaller than the current trend for larger display smartphones, the 4.5-inch 1280 x 720 pixel resolution Ubuntu Edge will dual-boot Android OS and Ubuntu's own mobile OS, and will offer the unique ability to connect to any monitor to transform the phone into an Ubuntu PC, with a fully integrated desktop OS and shared access to all files.

The phone will boast impressive hardware specs too: a top of the line multi-core processor, at least 4GB RAM and a massive 128GB storage. It will also be protected by a scratch-proof sapphire crystal display.

  • Dual boot Ubuntu mobile OS and Android
  • Fully integrated Ubuntu desktop PC when docked
  • Fastest multi-core CPU, 4GB RAM, 128GB storage
  • 4.5-inch 1,280 x 720 HD sapphire crystal display
  • 8MP low-light rear camera, 2MP front camera
  • Dual-LTE, dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4, NFC
  • GPS, accelerometer, gyro, proximity sensor, compass, barometer
  • Stereo speakers with HD audio, dual-mic recording, Active Noise Cancellation
  • MHL connector, 3.5mm jack
  • Silicon-anode Li-Ion battery
  • 64 x 9 x 124mm

If the pledge goal is reached, the phone is expected to ship May 2014. The minimum pledge required to receive the Edge is US$830, however, today only, a first day offer is available for US$600.
