Two High Performance Computing Cards Announced by AMD and NVIDIA Respectively
AMD has announced its 12GB FirePro S10000 graphics card that is meant for high performance computing (HPC) implementations. NVIDIA also has its own solution, in the form of the 12GB Tesla K40 graphics card.
The AMD FirePro S10000 has 12GB of GDDR5 video memory, and it features the "latest Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture." The card is designed for heavy single and double precision performance, making it suitable for HPC requirements in industries like oil exploration, aeronautics and automotive, design and engineering, geophysics, life sciences, just to name a handful. According to AMD, the card is expected to be available by spring 2014.
In the wake of AMD's announcement, NVIDIA has launched its 12GB Tesla K40 graphics card. The card features a fully-unlocked GK110 graphics core. In the previous cards of Tesla K20X and K20, the GK110 core wasn't fully enabled.
The new Tesla K40 boasts of 2880 CUDA cores, with 12GB of GDDR5 of video memory. At the same time, it also supports GPU Boost that actively monitors power headroom and uses any surplus to boost the graphics core in a controlled manner, for additional performance gains. In the earlier version of Tesla GPUs, this feature was disabled as it introduced GPU frequency jitter. Apparently, this issue has been resolved for the Tesla K40.
